Day 3: The Mysteries of the Dead Sea, Lot's Wife Pillar, and Lot's Cave

Today, we embark on a journey to the Dead Sea, which proudly sits at the lowest point on earth. As we venture forth, we shall indulge in the pleasures of swimming, floating, and partaking in a luxurious mud bath – truly a day of leisure awaits us.
Ah, let us delve into the tales of Sodom and Gomorrah, cities infamous for their dramatic and enduring presence in the Old Testament. Picture the scene as Lot and his kin hastily flee the blazing city of Sodium. Alas, Lot’s wife, in an act of defiance, cast an ill-fated glance back and was swiftly transformed into a pillar of salt as punishment for her disobedience.
But fear not, for amidst the chaos, Lot’s two daughters emerged unscathed and sought refuge in the sanctuary of Lot’s cave, nestled near the quaint town of Zoar in modern-day Safi. Legend has it that from the loins of these daughters, sons were born, whose descendants would go on to form the mighty Ammonite and Moabite peoples. Their kingdoms flourished in what we now know as central Jordan.
As the sun sets on this riveting chapter, we find ourselves standing upon a hillside overlooking the town of Zoar, where Byzantine Christians once erected a divine church and monastery in honor of Saint Lot, immortalizing his tale for generations to come.
But our journey doesn’t end here, for we now set our sights on the enchanting city of Petra, where mystery and wonder await us under the cloak of night. Join me as we continue our expedition into the heart of history and myth. Onward to Petra, our next destination for the night.

Day 4: Unveiling Petra's Splendor and Reuniting with Amman

In the morning, kick off your exploration of Petra, the breathtaking city carved right into the rose-red Mountains by the ingenious Nabateans and forgotten by civilization until the Swiss explorer Burkhardt stumbled upon it.

Stroll through the Siq, a narrow and twisting fissure flanked by towering cliffs, leading you to iconic sights like the Treasury, the Nabatean Theater, the Royal Tombs, the Roman Road, the majestic temple, the Winged Lion temple, and the serene basin. In the era of Jesus, Petra stood as a bustling hub of trade in the East Mediterranean, proudly serving as the rock-hewn capital of the Nabataean Kingdom.
Circling back to ancient times, during the Exodus, the legendary Moses and his people journeyed through the Petra area nestled in Edom.

Legend has it that a spring at Wadi Musa (known as the Valley of Moses) just beyond Petra is where Moses miraculously struck a rock to yield water for his people. Moses, despite gazing upon the Holy Land from Mount Nebo, was destined to never set foot in it. His brother Aaron met his end in Jordan and found his final resting place in Petra, said to be at Mount Hor or Jabal Harun in Arabic. Over time, a Byzantine church and an Islamic shrine/tomb dedicated to Aaron were constructed on the mountaintop, drawing pilgrims from afar.
